Childhood Obesity Prevention- Shawn Johnson

About 9million children over the age of 6 are considered overweight in this country. The American obesity epidemic has been passed to our youngest generation. Overweight children are at far greater risk of developing some chronic diseases, including Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In addition to putting their health at risk, overweight children are often subjected to exclusion by their peers, which can affect their emotional well-being. Teaching kids the importance of eating well and being physically active at a young age is crucial to reversing the trend of childhood obesity in this country. New PSAs featuring US Olympic Hopefuls paired with qubo’s animated characters reinforce the “Be a Player” message, as well as messages about “Energy Balance” and “Portion Size”.

@LMA629 She was 4’9” when she competed in the Olympics two years ago, I believe she’s 4’11” now.

@TalonWolf Sadly times have changed. Kids these days are on the internet or their cellphones or playing video games 90% of the time and hardly ever actually go out to play anymore. Yet another of the many downsides to too much technology.

@chickwithbrains241 i thought she was 4’9″. ive read that on other sites and she seems to shorter than other gymnasts, when a lot of gymnasts are 4’11″

@xRachelx1992 She isn’t trying to be an actress. The olympics are partnered with this program, so because shawn made such an impact in the olympics, they asked her to take part in this program.

This girl can’t talk, she has zero charisma, and she thinks she’s going to be an actress, lol what a joke.

@liegeofshadows maybe you way so little cuz your all flabby fat and no muscle…?

  12. chickwithbrains241 says:

@luke666808g She’s 4 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 90 pounds….The ideal weight of someone of that height is around 90-125 pounds, so if she lost 20 pounds, she’d be underweight and weight 70 pounds.

  13. chickwithbrains241 says:

@TalonWolf Kids are gaining more weight due to endorsement of junk foods and the fact that there’s more technology to play around with. Give a kid a computer with internet access, he/she will more than likely spend hours on Facebook or Myspace, or playing videogames or downloading music than going outside to play. Some kids don’t excersise at all, and the childhood obesity rate is growing. It’s sad, but times have changed.

An hour a day!? What the hell? When I was a kid I’d play from about 11 am until 7 pm everyday. I didn’t even eat sometimes because I thought it was ‘a waste of possible playtime’.

Latter part probably wasn’t healthy, but jesus, I think they’re setting the bar a bit low.

In my opinion, the amount of fat kids in the USA is a real poor reflection on this society in general. Parents feed their kids crap, kids live off junk food, soda, chips and all the other crap. I see parents feeding their kids soda and donuts for breakfast….well I guess it is ok because it is low in fat, sugar is good. When I was a kid there was one fat kid in school, that kid by todays standards would not even be fat. I think that lack of discipline is out of control in this country…YUCK.
